Lousy Jealousy

Envy takes the joy, happiness and contentment out of living.

Jealousy isn't referred to as the "big green monster" for nothing. God hates jealousy so much that it made His top-ten list -- the Ten Commandments. He etched in stone the following words: "You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

In workplace terms, this commandment from the book of Exodus could read, "You shall not covet your co-worker's salary, his corner office or award plaques, his title, budget, or privileges, or his favored status with the company president."

We are all God's children, and we shouldn't compare our "blessings" with those of others. When we envy what others have, we rob ourselves of the joy and contentment we should find in what God gives us. The emotion of jealousy is so powerful that it overtakes and squelches the positive energy we could be using to better ourselves - in the office and in our personal lives.

Guard your heart. If you find yourself unable to rejoice in the success of others, beware. And instead of focusing on what other's have, ask God to remind you of the many blessings, gifts and talents He has given you -- and how many of them are undeserved.

"Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have." - Hebrews 13:5
