Top 10 Heart Healthy Foods

Image
1. Avocado Once banished for their highfat content, avocados are making a health food comeback. While it's true that avocados are high in fat (one medium avocado has a whopping30g of fat!) it's actually their fat content that is responsible for their many health benefits. Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fat, the type of fat that can lower total and LDL (bad) cholesterol, and raise HDL (good) cholesterol levels. What's more, avocados are also rich in folate and potassium, two nutrients essential for heart health. Need to know: One medium avocado delivers over 300 calories, so a little goes a longway. Keep portion sizes to a minimum, for maximum health benefits. Add diced avocados to salads, or serve on wholegrain toast with coarse sea salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Heart and Warm Water

Image
This   is a very good article. Not only about the  warm water after  your meal, but about   Heart  Attacks .  The Chinese and Japanese  drink hot tea with their meals, not  cold  water, maybe it is time we adopt their   drinking  habit   while eating.

Sunburned

My head gets sunburned. It didn't used to, but now I have to be careful  when I go out. If I'm in the sun for more than a few minutes without  some sort of hat, I'll probably spend the next few days with an itchy  scalp. For some reason, my head burns more easily than it used to. I'd like to blame it on the ozone layer or global warming or something  of the sort, but I know the truth: with every passing year, I've got  less hair on the top of my head. My body is wearing out. There are other signs of this, like my need for  reading glasses, and more things seem to show up all the time.

Seven (7) Best Stress-Fighting Foods

Image
In our busy life, stress seems to be normal... But why should we allow this to destruct us and ruin our daily living? I also caused addiction to smoking which claims to be stress relievers... But instead of buying packs of cigarette that actually boils up the tension... consider these foods to reduce stress : Papaya Wouldn’t it be awesome if there was a magic nutrient that could stop the flow of stress hormones—the very hormones that make your body superefficient at storing fat calories? Wouldn’t you want to gobble that food up like crazy, especially if it tasted great? Half a medium papaya carries nearly 75 percent more vitamin C than an orange, and provides potent protection against stress. Researchers at the University of Alabama found 200 milligrams of vitamin C—about as much as you’ll find in one large papaya—twice a day nearly stopped the flow of stress hormones in rats. It should work for you, too .   Other smart sources of vitamin C: Red bell peppers, bro...

Facts and Fiction: ONIONS

Image
FICTION: In 1919 when the flu killed 40M people, there was a doctor that visited the many farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu. Many of the farmers and their family had contracted it and many died. The doctor came upon this one farmer and to his suprise, everyone was very healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different, the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home. The doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under the microscope. She gave him one and when he did this, he did find the flu virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore keeping the family healthy. Another story from NZ. She said that several years ago, many of her employees were coming down with a flu an so were many of her customers. The next year, she placed several bowls with onions around her shop. To her surprise, none of her staff got sick. It must work!!! ...

A BREAST CANCER: Paget's Disease

Image
In November, a rare kind of breast cancer was found. A lady developed a rash on her breast, similar to that of young mothers who are nursing. Because her mammogram had been clear, the doctor treated her with antibiotics for infections. After 2 rounds, it continued to get worse, so her doctor sent her for another mammogram. This time it showed a mass.  A biopsy found a fast growing malignancy. Chemo was started in order to shrink the growth; then a mastectomy was performed; then a full round of Chemo; then radiation. After about 9 months of intense treatment, she was given a clean bill of health.  She had one year of living each day to its fullest. Then the cancer returned to the liver area. She took 4 treatments and decided that she wanted quality of life, not the after effects of Chemo. She had 5 great months and she planned each detail of the final days. After a few days of needing morphine, she died. She left this message to be delivered to women everywhere:  ...

Fact and Fiction

Seven myths about veggies Myth: Fresh vegetables are more nutritious than frozen Fact: Studies show that sometimes you can get more nutrients from frozen veggies, depending on variety and how old the vegetables at your supermarket are. That's because produce starts losing nutrient quality as soon as it's picked. Frozen vegetables are flash-frozen right after harvest so they are preserved at their peak of freshness when they are most nutritious. Your best bet in terms of taste, nutrition, and the environment is still local in-season produce. When that's not an option frozen can be a better choice (from a nutrient standpoint) than spinach that takes two weeks to reach your table. Myth: Cooked veggies are less nutritious than raw Fact: It depends on the vegetable. "Cooking destroys some nutrients, but it releases others," says Marion Nestle, author of What to Eat. It destroys vitamin C and folic acid, according to Nestle, which is why it's not a great...

Tips for Better SLEEP

Millions of people have trouble with insomnia — either they can't fall asleep, or awake prematurely and unable to get back to sleep. The following sleep tips, compiled from various sources, may prove helpful to some of my fellow insomniacs: Only use your bed for sleeping or having sex, not for reading, doing paperwork, watching TV, snacking, or making phone calls. If you've been lying in bed but are beginning to fear you're not going to drop off, try some of these techniques: Count sheep or count backwards from 100 (one of my favorites) to stop yourself from thinking about the problems of yesterday or tomorrow; breathe deeply for awhile; or visualize some peaceful place. If you can't get to sleep after lying in bed for 30 minutes or more, get up for awhile. What to do? Try reading something incredibly boring. Develop a bedtime routine. Keep regular bedtime hours. Before bedtime, avoid tobacco and caffeinated beverages (not just coffee, but other drinks like tea,...

Hurting Heartburns

Heartburn, also known as pyrosis or acid indigestion is a burning sensation in the chest, just behind the breastbone or in the epigastrium. The pain often rises in the chest and may radiate to the neck, throat, or angle of the jaw. Heartburn is usually associated with regurgitation of gastric acid (gastric reflux). Heartburn is a major symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease. You can prevent the 'hurting heartburns' by the following: 1. Avoid heartburn-triggering foods. These vary from person to person, but common offenders include orange juice, chocolate, tomato sauce, spicy foods, mint, garlic, and vinegar. Fatty, greasy foods, like cheeseburgers and fries, are also heartburn instigators. 2. Stay upright for a few hours after you eat. Sitting up works with gravity to keep food and stomach acid from flowing up into your esophagus. Better yet, move about a bit to help speed digestion. "Our grandparents had it right when they headed out for a walk after a l...

6 Mistakes Your Doctor Maybe Making

By Meryl Davids Landau, Readers Digest HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE The mistake your doc may be making: Sticking with lifestyle changes when you need drugs. The evidence shows that it's safe to try to bring down mildly elevated blood pressure by eating better and exercising. But if your numbers are even moderately high, the advice is unequivocal: Your doctor must prescribe drugs because uncontrolled high blood pressure puts you at risk for a deadly heart attack or stroke.  Guidelines making this clear were crafted by a panel of leading scientists in 2003. But when 22 community doctors were asked by University of Texas researchers how they'd treat a hypothetical middle-aged man with the moderately high blood pressure of 145/92, nearly two thirds said they'd tell him to improve his lifestyle. Shockingly, only one of these practicing physicians was familiar with the recommended thresholds for prescribing drugs, says study author Joseph Ravenell, MD, now at New York University...

Asparagus for Cancer

Image
Three types of asparagus on a shop display, with white asparagus at the back and green asparagus in the middle. The plant at the front is Ornithogalum pyrenaicum, is commonly called wild asparagus. Several years ago, I had a man seeking asparagus for a friend who had cancer. He gave me a photocopied copy of an article, entitled, `Asparagus for cancer ' printed in Cancer News Journal, December 1979. I will share it here, just as it was shared with me: 'I am a biochemist, and have specialized in the relation of diet to health for over 50 years. Several years ago, I learned of the discovery of Richard R.Vensal, D.D.S. that asparagus might cure cancer. Since then, I have worked with him on his project.. We have accumulated a number of favourable case histories. Here are a few examples: Case No. 1 A man with an almost hopeless case of Hodgkin's disease (cancer of the lymph glands) who was completely incapacitated. Within 1 year of starting the asparagus therapy, his...

50 Little Health Tips Every Woman Should Know

1-3 Three ways to get the most out of your doctor visit 1. Know what you want out of your next M.D. visit: a diagnosis, a referral to a specialist? Keep your focus and you’ll be more likely to get what you need. 2. Don’t be scared or embarrassed to talk to your doctor—about anything. Of course my patients are reluctant to bring up complaints about things like butt pimples, excessive sweating and body odor, but unless you speak up, you’ll only continue to suffer. 3. Tell your doctor about any supplements you take. Some can have dangerous interactions with prescription drugs.      4-5 Two health reasons to have sex 4. Schedule weekly orgasms; I call it getting your ‘vitamin O.’ Orgasms release hormones that boost emotional well-being and your immune system—and may even prolong life. If you don’t have a partner, for health’s sake, get a toy! 5. Few things in life are fun, free and healthy, but sex is one of them. Do it! ...

Food that Can Fix (Almost) Anything

Image
by Glamour Magazine / Shine (Yahoo) When Hippocrates wrote, “Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food,” he was probably worrying about the pesky plague epidemic of 430 BC—not thinking about how a handful of almonds might ward off a girl’s pre-period headaches or how green tea might give her thicker, lusher hair. But those things may in fact be true, and scientists are beginning to figure out how food helps the body run smoothly inside and out. “People absolutely underestimate the importance of nutrition when it comes to appearance,” says Michael Roizen, M.D., chief of the Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Center and coauthor of YOU: Being Beautiful. The prescription is simple—and mercifully easy to swallow. Read on, dig in, repeat as necessary. ---o0o---  For: Little Age Lines, Try: GRAPES What’s so special about antioxidants like the vitamin C found in grapes? They act as your skin’s bodyguards, repairing and even preventing premature dryness, fine lines and sagging caus...
