Proud Daddy

Image
Four friends, who hadn't seen each other in 30 years, reunited at a party...   After several drinks, one of the men had to use the rest room. Those who remained talked about their kids. The first guy said, 'My son is my pride and joy. He started working at a successful company at the bottom of the barrel. He studied Economics and Business Administration and soon began to climb the corporate ladder and now he's the president of the company. He became so rich that he gave his best friend a top of the line Mercedes for his birthday.' The second guy said, 'Darn, that's terrific! My son is also my pride and joy. He started working for a big airline, then went to flight school to become a pilot. Eventually he became a partner in the company, where he owns the majority of its assets He's so rich that he gave his best friend a brand new jet for his birthday.' The third man said: 'Well, that's terrific! My son studied in the best univer

Gold-Dispensing ATM

Image
I know it sounds a “little” over the top, but in a place where wealthy sheiks come to drink cappuccinos topped with gold flakes, the gold-dispensing ATM machine fits right in.  Invented by German entrepreneur, Thomas Geisler, Gold To Go is an ATM, covered with a thin layer of gold, that dispenses 320 gold items, from small gold bars to customized coins. First tested in 2009, in Germany, the Gold To Go ATM is now set up in the Emirates Palace Hotel, in Abu-Dhabi, where the ceilings are coated in gold. “All the gold is imported from Germany, and soon we will have a customized gold bar with a print of the Emirates Palace logo, which will be a nice souvenir for guests to take home,” said Thomas Geisler. So far his invention has proved a hit, with one of the hotel guests buying one of each gold items the ATM dispenses. Right now it only accepts local currency, but modifications for credit cards will soon be made. The region’s high demand for gold, and the ongoing economic turbulence, ma

The value of Time

Image
To realise the value of a year… …ask a student who received a failing grade. To recognise the value of a month… …ask a mother who gave birth to a premature baby. To appreciate the value of a week… …ask a person in need of a new heart. To know the value of a day… …ask a daily wage earner who will not eat if she doesn’t work. To comprehend the value of an hour… …ask a lover waiting for her beloved to secretly meet her. To fathom the value of a minute… …ask a person who just missed the last train home. To perceive the value of a second… …ask a paramedic who revived the car accident survivor. To measure the value of a millisecond… …ask an athlete that won the gold medal in the Olympics. Time… Sometime it flies. Sometime it crawls. Most of the time we can never seem to get enough of it. The clock is ticking so make the most of today. ____________________ Frowarded by Georgie

The $50 Story

Image
Morris and his wife Esther went to the state fair every year. And every year Morris would say, 'Esther,I'd like to ride in that helicopter.' Esther always replied, 'I know Morris, but that helicopter ride is fifty dollars, and fifty dollars is fifty dollars!' One year Esther and Morris went to the fair, and Morris said, 'Esther, I'm 85 years old. If I don't ride that helicopter, I might never get another chance.' To this, Esther replied, 'Morris that helicopter ride is fifty dollars, and fifty dollars is fifty dollars.' The pilot overheard the couple and said, 'Folks I'll make you a deal. I'll take the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and don't say a word I won't charge you a penny! ' 'But if you say one word it's fifty dollars.' Morris and Esther agreed and up they went. The pilot did all kinds of fancy manoeuvres, but not a word was heard. He did his

Tips for Better SLEEP

Millions of people have trouble with insomnia — either they can't fall asleep, or awake prematurely and unable to get back to sleep. The following sleep tips, compiled from various sources, may prove helpful to some of my fellow insomniacs: Only use your bed for sleeping or having sex, not for reading, doing paperwork, watching TV, snacking, or making phone calls. If you've been lying in bed but are beginning to fear you're not going to drop off, try some of these techniques: Count sheep or count backwards from 100 (one of my favorites) to stop yourself from thinking about the problems of yesterday or tomorrow; breathe deeply for awhile; or visualize some peaceful place. If you can't get to sleep after lying in bed for 30 minutes or more, get up for awhile. What to do? Try reading something incredibly boring. Develop a bedtime routine. Keep regular bedtime hours. Before bedtime, avoid tobacco and caffeinated beverages (not just coffee, but other drinks like tea,

A beautiful story

I was born in a secluded village on a mountain. Day by day, my parents plowed the yellow dry soil with their backs towards the sky. I have a brother who is 3 years younger than me. I wanted to buy a handkerchief, which all girls around me seemed to have. So, one day I stole 50 cents from my father's drawer. Father had discovered about the stolen money right away. He made me and my younger brother kneel against the wall as he held a bamboo stick in his hand. "Who stole the money?" he asked. I was stunned, too afraid to talk. Neither of us admitted to the fault, so he said, "Fine, if nobody wants to admit, you two should be beaten!" He lifted up the bamboo stick. Suddenly, my younger brother gripped father's hand and said, "Dad, I was the one who did it!" The long stick smacked my brother's back repeatedly. Father was so angry that he kept on whipping my brother until he lost his breath. After that, he sat down on our stone bed

The Stranger

A few years after I was born, my Dad met a stranger who was new to our small Texas town. From the beginning, Dad was fascinated with this enchanting newcomer and soon invited him to live with our family. The stranger was quickly accepted and was around from then on. As I grew up, I never questioned his place in my family. In my young mind, he had a special niche. My parents were complementary instructors: Mom taught me good from evil, and Dad taught me to obey. But the stranger...he was our storyt elle r. He would keep us spellbound for hours on end with adventures, mysteries and comedies. If I wanted to know anything about politics, history or science, he always knew the answers about the past, understood the present and even seemed able to predict the future! He took my family to the first major league ball game. He made me laugh, and he made me cry. The stranger never stopped t alking, but Dad didn't seem to mind. Sometimes, Mom would get up quietly while the rest of us we

A Fresh Start

"If you wake up breathing, you have another chance." I was able to make a fresh start recently. It felt so good to be able to put all of those past mistakes behind me. It felt so wonderful to be able to look towards the future with clear eyes and a clean heart. It felt so glorious to greet the new day with a peaceful mind and a joyful soul.   I didn’t get my fresh start by moving to another town, however. I didn’t get it by starting a new job. I didn’t get it by going on vacation. I didn’t get it by buying something either. I didn’t get it by changing the world around me at all. Those types of changes never work anyway. You can’t clean your house by sweeping the sidewalk, after all.   How did I get my fresh start then? Why, I simply opened my eyes this morning. You see, everyday of our lives can be a fresh start if we wish. Each new morning is another gift from God when we can begin again to clean our house within and to live our lives better than we did before. Each

Hurting Heartburns

Heartburn, also known as pyrosis or acid indigestion is a burning sensation in the chest, just behind the breastbone or in the epigastrium. The pain often rises in the chest and may radiate to the neck, throat, or angle of the jaw. Heartburn is usually associated with regurgitation of gastric acid (gastric reflux). Heartburn is a major symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease. You can prevent the 'hurting heartburns' by the following: 1. Avoid heartburn-triggering foods. These vary from person to person, but common offenders include orange juice, chocolate, tomato sauce, spicy foods, mint, garlic, and vinegar. Fatty, greasy foods, like cheeseburgers and fries, are also heartburn instigators. 2. Stay upright for a few hours after you eat. Sitting up works with gravity to keep food and stomach acid from flowing up into your esophagus. Better yet, move about a bit to help speed digestion. "Our grandparents had it right when they headed out for a walk after a l

What Love means to 4-8 year olds...

Slow down for three minutes to read this. It is so worth it. Touching words from the mouth of babes. Stop the ants from marching

Image
It's definitely unnerving to see a line of ants marching across the kitchen floor. But you don't need to hire an expensive professional exterminator or spray toxic chemicals to banish nuisance ants from your home. Pesticides can harm your family's health as well as your pets'. Plus, they don't get to the root of the problem. Instead, try these tips for preventing ants from entering your home in the first place and banishing them once they get there. (Carpenter ants are a more serious problem, so make sure that those aren't what you're seeing inside.) Keep the ants from coming in Seal cracks or holes where outdoor ants are entering the house. This will require less than an hour of your time and an inexpensive tube of caulk. It's also a good idea to trim the branches of trees or shrubs that touch your home so that ants can't crawl in through windows and doors. Sprinkling cinnamon, cayenne pepper, or cloves where ants enter or gravitate to ca

Optical Illusions

Image
Say the color of the words below; try to do it as fast as you can. * * * You are likely to see that the top row of circles appear as "bumps" followed by "holes" and so on in an alternating pattern.  Can you try and see the opposite? Have a good hard look and try to see the first row as holes and the second as bumps. Difficult? Now hide the bottom row of circles from your field of vision (either with your hand, or scrolling your browser window appropriatly). Is it easier to see the first row as holes now? * * * Look at the center of the above image, while moving your head closer and farther away from your monitor. * * * Simple concept, but crazy effect on the eyes. Stare at it for a while, then turn your gaze to a wall or your hand. * * * Stare at the black dot above. The surrounding haze will dissapear. * * * The area near the center of the above illusion appears lighter than the surrounding area. * * * Vertical and Horizontal Lines appear, thou
